Raw vs Remy Hair Extensions, the Complete Guide

Raw vs Remy Hair: the short answer

Raw hair is 100% natural human hair collected from a single donor and never chemically processed: no dyeing, no perming, no silicone coating. The cuticle on every strand is intact and runs in one direction, from root to tip.

Remy hair is also natural human hair with the cuticle kept aligned, but it is usually collected from several donors and then processed (a light acid wash, dyeing to even out the colour, and sometimes a silicone coating that adds temporary shine).

In short: all raw hair is Remy, but not all Remy hair is raw. The real difference is the source and the level of processing, and that decides how long an extension lasts and how it looks after months of washing and styling.

Raw vs Remy, point by point

  • Source: raw comes from one donor; Remy usually from several donors.
  • Chemical processing: raw has none; Remy is usually processed and dyed, and may be silicone-coated.
  • Cuticle direction: aligned in both, but fully intact in raw hair because it never saw an acid bath.
  • Lifespan: raw lasts 1 to 3 years with proper care; Remy lasts roughly 6 months to a year.
  • Tangling over time: raw tangles very little; Remy tangles more once the silicone washes off.
  • Colouring and heat: raw takes colour and heat styling like your own hair; processed Remy tolerates less.
  • Shades: raw mostly comes in natural shades, and lighter tones are dyed professionally; Remy comes in many ready-made colours because it is pre-dyed.
  • Price: raw costs more up front but works out cheaper over time because you replace it less often.

What about virgin hair?

Virgin means the hair has never been dyed or processed. It does not necessarily mean single-donor, so virgin hair can still be blended from several sources.

Why raw hair lasts longer

Hair that was never chemically treated cannot be chemically damaged. Silicone-coated Remy looks great for the first few weeks, then the coating washes away and dryness and tangling show up. Raw hair starts structurally sound, so it can be washed, styled and coloured safely, and it stays healthy for 1 to 3 years with proper care.

Proper care means sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner, gentle brushing from the ends upwards, a heat protectant before blow-drying or flat-ironing, and never sleeping on wet hair. See our hair extension care guide.

How to tell real raw hair before you buy

  • Ask about the source: a serious store states clearly where the hair comes from (for example Russian or European) and whether it is single-donor.
  • Check the shine: an over-the-top glassy shine usually means a silicone coating. Raw hair has a natural shine, like your own.
  • Burn test on one strand: human hair burns slowly, smells like burnt hair and turns to ash; synthetic fibre melts into a hard bead.
  • Look at the colour: raw hair usually comes in close natural shades, not a suspiciously perfect uniform colour.
  • Look at the price: genuine raw hair is never very cheap, because single-donor, unprocessed hair costs more to source.
  • Try before you decide: order a free hair sample and check the texture and colour yourself; you only pay shipping.

Raw or Remy: which one is right for you?

If you want an extension that lasts, looks completely natural and can be coloured and styled freely, raw hair is the smarter choice. If you need a short-term solution for a single occasion on a tighter budget, Remy may be enough, as long as you expect a shorter life.

Frequently asked questions

Can raw hair be coloured?

Yes. Because it has never been dyed or processed, it takes colour very well. We recommend having it coloured or lightened by a professional.

How long does raw hair last compared with Remy?

Raw hair lasts 1 to 3 years with proper care; processed Remy lasts roughly 6 months to a year.

Why is raw hair more expensive?

Because it comes from a single donor and is never blended or processed, which makes it rarer and more costly to source. It is cheaper in the long run because you replace it less often.

Is all "100% human hair" raw hair?

No. Remy is also 100% human hair, but it is processed, so the word "human" alone is not enough. Always ask about the source and the processing.

Is raw hair suitable for thin or fine hair?

Yes. With no processing or coating it blends naturally with fine hair. For thin hair we suggest invisible clip-ins or H6 extensions, because their base is very thin.
